Viewed from the broader chronology of Time, with a deliberate capital "T", Reiki is very much a new kid on the block compared with other healing modalities discovered a little over a hundred years ago. However, fundamental to the understanding and function of Reiki is the Chakras, or energy centres located down the body, which are ancient and arguably as old as Time itself.

According to substantiated sources, the Chakras were "discovered" in what is now India by Hindu healers in about 2500 BCE. Given the vastness of time and the scant written records of the time, an exact date and quite how the Chakra system was come across and formalized into what it is today are questions still very much open to conjecture. In the approximately five millennia since then, it has been established that there are seven major chakras running down the human body from the crown of the head to the base of the spine. Not only in humans, but in all living things, be they animals, plants or other forms of life, without exception. I said seven "major" chakras, as some claim there are up to 88,000!
Each of the seven Chakras has its own specific colour and is governed by a function within the body, when each of the Chakras are in their optimum state, the body is in a state of health, they are not static and are constantly changing from minute to minute depending on changing environment starting from the top of the head, the Chakras are set out as follows:
The Crown Chakra, or Sahasrara, is located at the top of the head, it is purple or white. This is your place of connection with the Divine or the Ultimate Source, a blockage in this Chakra manifests as psychological problems.
The Third Eye Chakra, or Ajna is located on the forehead slightly above eye level. Reddish-purple in colour, it is linked with wisdom, intuition, perception and awareness, blockages here can manifest as depression, and rigidity and unbending thoughts and attitudes.
The Throat Chakra, or Vishuddhi, is found at the level of the throat, as the name suggests and is light blue. This is the centre of communication, creativity, self-expression and judgement and is linked with your shoulders arms and hands. If this area has any blockages, they manifest as creative blocks, dishonesty or not being able to communicate your needs to others.
The fourth Chakra is the Anahata, or heart Chakra, this is a swirling combination of dark green and pink. This is the centre of love, compassion, harmony and peace and is connected to your arms lungs and heart. We fall in love through out heart Chakra. Issues in this Chakra can manifest as problems with the immune system, problems with the heart and lungs a lack of humanity and compassion towards yourself and others.
The Solar Plexus Chakra, or Manipura is located a few centimetres above the belly button and is yellow. This Chakra is linked with the digestive system, muscles, pancreas and adrenal glands. It is the seat of your emotional life. Feelings of personal power, laughter, joy and anger are associated with this Chakra. Sensibility, ambition and ability to achieve are stored here. Blockages manifest as anger, frustration, lack or direction or a sense of victimization.
The sixth Chakra is the Sacral Chakra, or Swadishthana. Orange in colour, this is found between the base of the spine and the belly button and is linked to the lower abdomen, kidneys, bladder, circulatory system and reproductive organs. It is associated with emotion, desire, pleasure and creativity. Blockages show themselves as emotional problems as well as compulsive, obsessive behaviours.
The Seventh Chakra is the Base Chakra, or Muladhara. Red in colour, this is located at the base of the spine. Being the closest Chakra to the earth, it is associated with earthly grounding and physical survival, and is linked to the legs, feet, bones lower intestines and adranal glands. Blockages manifest as paranoia, fear, procrastination and defensiveness.
The role of Reiki is to bring each of the Chakras back into a state of alignment and balance. Depending on the client this can take up to four sessions to achieve. Once this is accomplished, maintenance is advised of about one session a month.
Much more will be written about the Chakras in future articles, the aim of this is to provide the reader with a brief overview and a basic outline of the Chakra system before any deeper investigation and discussion of the Chakra system is attempted.
